Independence promotes the fine arts at all levels and encourages creativity and a challenging environment for all our students. Our fine arts programs have a solid history of being some of the best in their conference and the state, receiving awards and invitations to perform outside of the District.

Our award-winning marching bands, jazz bands, and concert bands are built from the musical skills of the youngest-age students. Students in the early grades are introduced to musical terms and instruments through scheduled classes. They can then start school-sponsored instrument lessons in fifth grade.
Marching band is first introduced in grades 7-8. Our high school (9-12) marching band performs at home football games and competes all over the state.Â
Jazz One and Jazz Two bands are equally as successful and often place in the state competition.

Our elementary choirs perform in the Junior/Senior High School auditorium. If you want to see these concerts, plan to arrive early. Even in our 700-seat auditorium, seating is at capacity. The Junior High choir is nearly a third of the student body from grades 7 and 8. These students build for future success in the high school choirs. The High School choir is large as well and creates a powerful sound.
Singers may also try out for smaller singing groups and many go to state to represent Independence at the state level.
