School counselors are educational specialists who are certified or licensed professionals with a master's degree or higher in counseling. As the student's advocate, the role of a school counselor is to provide and deliver a comprehensive school counseling program that meets the standards and benchmarks designated by the American School Counseling Association and the Iowa State Counselor Association. A comprehensive program encourages all students' academic, career, and social/emotional development, and helps all students in maximizing their achievement. Our program is an articulated, sequential PreK-12th grade program that is comprehensive in scope, preventive in design, developmental in nature, driven by data, and integral to the school district's curricula and instructional program. In addition to our counselors, we have many other people who advocate and are resources for our students. Some of those people are our At-Risk staff, a Juvenile Court Liaison, and an Interventionist.

Physical education provides the opportunity to teach students about movement, strategies, teamwork, problem-solving, and health-related fitness. Each of these areas is addressed in the National Association for Sport and Physical Education’s (NASPE) standards and is important to teaching the whole student. Exposing students to various physical activities, sports, and methods of fitness can better provide enjoyment of physical activity, as well as build social, psychomotor, and cognitive skills. Physical education offers many benefits for students and has shown to be beneficial for all individuals in various areas including society, school, and social life. Physical education at the high school level offers two different forms of instruction. Students have the opportunity to participate in traditional physical education or performance physical education. Both of these programs incorporate weight lifting, cardiovascular movement, and individual/team activities.

The School to Work Program is designed to give high school students the chance to explore various local career opportunities and occupations in the community.
A student is expected to obtain 35 hours of experience over a 9-week term at a location/company of their choice, usually done during the school day. The students are responsible for tracking their hours, corresponding what they are learning, and keeping good relations in both the workplace and with their coordinator. The program helps students develop important job skills, work habits, attitudes, and realistic expectations of careers and industries by observing and participating in them firsthand. Through these experiences, students develop the necessary social and personal skills essential for living and working as productive members of the community.
The Iowa Core Science Standards represent the standards that our science department uses to provide students with a solid scientific education. The science standards at Independence Junior/Senior High reflect our state’s, and district’s, emphasis on giving all students the real-world knowledge and skills needed to be ready for college or the workforce, regardless of the career paths they choose. The 7th and 8th grade science classes offer an integrated approach that includes topics about Life, Earth, Physical, and Engineering. High school students are required to complete physical science, biology, and one elective course for graduation. All science courses at Independence Junior/Senior High are intended to develop critical thinking skills through inquiry-based lessons.
