Asbestos Removal Nearing Completion in Old High School Building
June 10, 2015 (Independence, IA) – Advanced Environmental, out of Waterloo, IA, have been busy the past couple of months removing asbestos from the old Independence High School building. As soon as the asbestos is completely removed, Lansing Brothers Construction, out of Luxemberg, IA, will then start the salvaging process in mid July. They will then commence demolition and site restoration in later August and early September.
The original Independence High School building was built in 1954 and was replaced by the new Junior Senior High School on the West side of town in 2013. In May 2015, the School District sold the old bus barn. The School District has reached an agreement with the City of Independence to sell the City a portion of the old high school site, which is scheduled to be transferred after the demolition is completed. The School District will then have approximately four acres of land left at the old site, which consists of the old tennis courts and the land to the north of gym. The School District will discuss disposition of that remaining land at a future board meeting.
