Champ’s Cupboard Expands to Include Elementary Schools
October 20, 2016 (Independence, IA) Champ’s Cupboard was created to help meet the basic needs of students in our community. It was started during the 2015-2016 school year by school counselor Shalon Frye and representatives from three area churches; Immanuel Lutheran Church, United Methodist Church, and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. The cupboard is currently housed at the Junior Senior High School between the Main Office and the Counseling Office. All recipients are kept confidential and there is no cost to students taking items from Champ’s Cupboard. The cupboards are filled by area churches and other local groups.
This year, the Champ’s board is working with the elementary counselors, Christie Litterer and Greg Moen, to expand Champ’s Cupboard to include East and West Elementary students. The needs at the elementary schools are very different from what is needed at the Junior Senior High School level. The goal for this year is to fill both elementary cupboards with age appropriate items.
East Elementary needs basic personal care items. Some items needed at East Elementary are; body wash, tear free shampoo and conditioner, children’s toothpaste, children’s toothbrushes, hair brushes, combs and lice kits.
West Elementary also needs basic personal care items. Some examples are: body wash, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, hair brushes, combs, lice kits and deodorant.
Tax deductible donations can be dropped off at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. Products and supplies may be dropped off directly at East and West Elementary Schools, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, United Methodist Church, Immanuel Lutheran Church or at the Junior Senior High School. All donations will be used to stock the shelves of Champ’s Cupboard.
