City Decides to Forego Purchase of Old High School Building
August 4, 2014 (Independence, IA) – Following a work session on July 22nd, the City of Independence has decided to forego the purchase of the former Independence Community School District High School building. The District and City had previously discussed the potential for the City to purchase the 20 acres and building for $1.00.
The two entities had entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on March 10th which called for the city to purchase the building for $1.00 pending an inspection period of 60 days and exclusivity for 90 days. “After having an engineer study it was obvious that the cost to make the building functional or even taking it down was going to be more expensive than what we feel the taxpayers would be willing to spend at this time”, said Mayor Bonita Davis.
The District plans to discuss disposal of the property at the August Board of Education meeting. “It’s unfortunate we were not able to come to an agreement on the sale of the building, but we want to continue to work hand in hand with the City on various other projects”, added Superintendent Russell Reiter.
