David Lang Receives Karl King Distinguished Service Award

December 6, 2017, (Independence) The Northeast Iowa Bandmaster Association (NEIBA) announced Mr. David Lang as the recipient of the 2017 Karl King Distinguished Service Award.

The Karl King Distinguished Service Awards (Active and Retired) are given to members of Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association who have made significant contributions to the NEIBA/IBA (Iowa Bandmaster Association) organization and school band programs. Winners are selected by a panel made up of the current NEIBA leadership and past winners of the Karl King Award.  The winner’s name will be submitted to the state as a candidate for the Iowa Bandmasters Association Distinguished Service award.

Principal John Howard states, “”Mr. Lang is a most deserving recipient of this award. His leadership, passion, commitment and outstanding work ethic, for over two decades, have resulted in Independence having one of the most successful bands in the state.”

Mr. Lang is currently in his 24th year of teaching. He taught at Central City Community Schools for three years and one year at East Buchanan Community Schools before coming to teach in Independence. Mr. Lang is a 1988 graduate of The University of Iowa, where he earned his Bachelors in Music Education.

Mr. Lang received his award on December 2 at a luncheon hosted by NEIBA in Oelwein, Iowa.

Superintendent Russell Reiter had this to say, “I want to offer my congratulations to David on being the recipient of this very distinguished award. David has made truly significant contributions to our band program each and every year. He has also been very committed to working with our state organizations and helping them to succeed as well. Our school district is extremely proud of David and all of his efforts.”
