Girls Bowling team places fifth at state

March 11, 2020 (Independence, IA) – The Independence Girls Bowling team recently represented the school district at the State Bowling competition, bringing home a fifth place title – and a whole lot of hope for next year.

Coach Todd Lamphier says the team faced some tough competition, but was able to perform well under the pressure.

“Some of these girls hadn’t competed on this level before, but we really bowled well against some top teams,” said Lamphier.

The energy was high at Cadillac Lanes well before the tournament even began – Lamphier says a line formed outside the building hours before the doors opened.

“We had a great crowd and a really good atmosphere to compete in,” said Lamphier. “It was an indescribable, unreal experience.”

Throughout the season, Lamphier says the team improved with each competition, breaking records and setting a precedent along the way.

“Our season started off slow, but we really got the ball rolling the more we practiced and competed,” said Lamphier. “We set a few records, including the WaMaC Tournament record for highest team score. Every time we bowled, we viewed it as an opportunity to learn more about ourselves as a team.”

Ending the season on a high note leaves many wondering what is in store for next season. Lamphier assures that the team is already setting goals for next year.

“Next year, we hope to raise the talent level of the overall bowling program, and become more competitive,” said Lamphier. “Half of the WaMaC conference teams qualified for state, so we need to find ways to get ahead and stay competitive as a team.”

With no seniors on the team, this year’s state qualifiers all plan to return next year to finish what they started, according to Lamphier. With hard work, determination, and a supportive community, Lamphier has high hopes for next season.

“If we keep pushing it to the next level, we can be one of the best programs in the state,” said Lamphier. “We can’t thank our community, local businesses, and families enough for their involvement in making our program as great as it is.”
