August 8, 2013 (Independence, IA) – The Independence Community School District will host a grand opening of their new state of the art Jr./Sr. High School on Sunday, August 18th at 2:00pm. The public is invited to celebrate the grand opening with a ribbon cutting, refreshments, and tours through the new facility.
The 170,000-square-foot building on the Independence Community School District campus is home to state-of-the-art classrooms, science laboratories, and administrative/guidance offices. The facility, which will open this month for the 2013-2014 school year, features a 17,500-square-foot gymnasium with press boxes and a 700 seat auditorium with advanced acoustics/sound system. It also houses a skylight system spanning the entire “main street” area of the school for natural daylight and four locker rooms which also serve as a FEMA safe room.
“When visitors first walk into this new facility, I think they will be amazed at everything that’s been accomplished. This building’s design and location was truly a community-driven project and the enthusiasm and care from community members radiates throughout,” said Russell Reiter, ICSD Superintendent. “It really is a great time to be a mustang!”
The district broke ground on the $27.5 million project in 2012. The building was designed by HSR Associates of La Crosse, WI. Larson Construction Co., Inc. of Independence, Iowa served as general contractor of the project. Doug Larson of Larson Construction added, “We are very proud of this project and the dedication and work our team put into it. Community members have been involved since day one and volunteered hundreds of hours in site prep and in-kind work. It really goes to show how a community can pull together to create something spectacular for generations to come.”
