ICSD Students Named Finalists at 2016 Dorian Vocal Festival
February 1, 2016 (Independence, IA) – Five students from the Independence Community School District (ICSD) High School Concert Choir, directed by Roger Barloon, attended the 66th annual Dorian Vocal Festival from January 9-11, 2016. The Dorian Vocal Festival, held at Luther College in Decorah, consists of approximately 1,125 student singers from over 240 schools in five states. Of those 1,125 participants, 200 auditioned for solos, 25 were chosen as semi-finalists and five finalists were chosen to sing at the Grand Concert held on the last night of the Festival.
For the first time in history, two Independence Community School District students were named semi-finalist, Ericka Barloon and Avery Nabholz. Additionally, Avery Nabholz went on to be selected as one of the five finalists to sing at the Festival’s Grand Concert.
This is the first time an Independence student has been a finalist at the Dorian Vocal Festival and only the second time ICSD has had a finalist at any vocal festival. Recent graduate, Monica Crawford, was a finalist at last year’s Meistersinger Festival held at Wartburg College in Waverly.
