July 21, 2015 (Independence, IA) – A unique music opportunity for local Jazz Camp students takes place on Wednesday, July 22nd at the Independence Junior Senior High School’s Auditorium; a chance to play in front of a live audience with the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) created group, “The Brazilian 2wins”. The 6:30 pm concert is open to the public and is free.
Each summer, music directors David Lang, Lisa Lang, and Karl Smith put on a Jazz Camp to introduce music students to the art of jazz music; as well as the art of live performance. Many area music students will never have the opportunity to experience playing live on stage in front of a public audience with a band outside of their school groups.
For the fifth year in a row, the camp has brought in a headliner group to perform with the students during the concluding concert. This past year, the legendary Bob Door and the Blue Band was the headliner. This year is no exception as the UNI created group, “The Brazilian 2wins” will be attending. While the bands that come don’t always play jazz, students attending the camp will learn to play all types of music and collaborate with other musicians.
The camp places all kids by grade level into one of three big bands, and also gives volunteer students the chance to play in smaller jazz combos along with the opportunity to perform on stage with the headliner. The music staff’s goal is to give these hard working students the opportunity to perform for as many people as possible.
Local media, photographers, and community members are invited to attend this beneficial event.
