Indee Archers Finish Well at State Tournament

March 10, 2017, (Independence, IA) – This past weekend, the Independence Community School District (ICSD) Archery Club, Indee Mustang Archers, participated in the State Archery Tournament located in Des Moines. The high school team finished strong in 19th place, while three additional individuals on the team will move onto the National Championship held in Louisville, Kentucky in May.

Individual finalists include Megan Bussan, who finished 9th in high school girls and 1st in 12th grade girls; Matt Bolton, who finished 7th in high school boys and 2nd in 12th grade boys; and Gavin Mestad, who finished 10th in elementary boys.

In addition to finishing at the top of their flights, Megan Bussan and Matt Bolton both received scholarships from Iowa NASP program sponsored by the Iowa DNR. The scholarships were awarded to them based on their scores in their respective divisions. Megan was the recipient of a $1,500 scholarship and Matt was the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship.
Initiated in 2016, the Indee Mustang Archers is part of NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) and just finished their second regular season, which runs from December through mid-February. The Indee Mustang Archers is an after school club for students in grades 4-12. This year 69 students took part in the program; meeting twice a week at West Elementary gym for practices. The Indee Mustang Archers are coached by Steve McGraw, Kriss McGraw, Chris Luloff, Jess Ender, Travis Mestad, Travis Butters, Larry Spece and David Wilson.
Coach Kriss McGraw states, “The State Tournament is the largest event our archers have participated in as a team. The pressure and competition is immense with 1498 total archers competing. Our team did a great job, both in supporting each other before shooting and on the shooting line. They looked great and shot well. We could not be more proud of the way they represented Independence Community Schools.”
