Independence FCCLA Participates in Many Events
February 26, 2019 (Independence, Iowa) The Independence Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) have been participated in many events this year. One of the purposes of FCCLA is to create a bond within our community by doing service learning and leadership activities.
Earlier this year, members volunteered at the Lexington Estates Trick-or-Treat event, as well as attending the annual Fall Leadership Rally in Des Moines. The FCCLA chapter also sells “Crush for your Crush” during Valentine’s week and flowers and theater grams for the Fall Play and Spring Musical. A large part of the FCCLA fundraising efforts go towards registration for district and state leadership events and service projects within the community.
Last year during the holiday season, members donated toys to the local Operation Threshold and had many members volunteer to ring the bell for the Salvation Army. The FCCLA has been a part of bell ringing for the past two years and plans to continue in future years.
Throughout the year, members have the opportunity to do a Peer Education Project. The Peer Education Project is comprised of three projects. Each project identifies a concern within the community or school, and then requires the member to tack action to help improve the concern. This year, multiple groups are participating in the Peer Education Project and the FCCLA is expecting great success.
For the first time in chapter history, members competed at the District level in the Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) event. The Independence Chapter results were great. Allyson Hearn received a Gold rating and Ellie Sweeney and Brynn Bonefas both received Silver ratings. The FCCLA chapter is looking forward to attending the State Leadership Conference and will cheer on Allyson, Ellie and Brynn as they compete in the state STAR event in Des Moines on March 31st – April 2nd. If they bring home a gold rating they will continue on to Nationals in Anaheim California in June.
Allyson Hearn had this to say about her FCCLA experience, “FCCLA has given me so many opportunities and skills that I will need out in the real world. It has shaped me to become a leader. FCCLA has given me countless memories that I will never forget!”
Other members who are eligible to attend for peer recognition are Maggie Albert and Grace Schmadeke for Student Body Peer Education requirements and Allyson Hearn, Claudia Henningsen, and Sophie Michael for Public Relations Peer Education requirements.
