Independence FFA Competes at District Meats and Milk Quality CDEs

On August 2nd 2018, the Independence FFA Chapter competed in Milk Quality and Meats Evaluation Career Development Event in Earlville, IA. In the Milk Quality CDE, FFA members judge milk quality, cheese identification, general knowledge test and somatic cell count in milk.  Team members Delaney Martin, Jaden Schwarting and Alivia Thomas placed 3rd overall. Jaden Schwarting placed 6th overall individually. The team will compete at State Saturday Sept. 8th in Manchester.

The Meat Evaluation team placed 2nd overall at the Northeast District FFA Meat Evaluation CDE held in Earlville, IA. The competition involved calculating a ground beef formulation, yield grading and quality grading of beef carcasses, carcass ranking, and retail identification of 25 different retail cuts from beef, pork, and lamb. The team members individual placings included: Megan Corkery 2nd, Avery Hanaway 4th,and Keegan Zimmerly 7th and Kenzie Fischels. The team will compete at the FFA State Meat Evaluation CDE held August 25th at Iowa State University for the opportunity to advance to the FFA National Meat CDE in Indiana this October.
