Independence, IA- As planting season begins to wind down in Buchanan County, Independence FFA Members looks back on the valuable lessons they have learned. Members of this year’s field management committee included Chairmen, Matthew Bolton and members Tanner Erickson-Dale, Ryan Thompson, Grant Postel, Mark Thompson, and Karter Wendling.
With the help of Ethan Henderson and a number of community members, the committee planted a test plot in the field space between the new tennis courts and baseball/softball complex, which included 30 different varieties of seed. Up front communication and meetings with seed providers took place in March and lots of planning took place the day of to make sure correct records were maintained.
With the help of those at Innovative Ag Services, the Field Management Committee has also been responsible for selling and marketing the grain harvested from the agriculture education field, which still contributes to funding the high school agriculture education program. The skills have been invaluable to these FFA members as many of them are interested in pursuing careers in the agricultural industry.
Members would like to extend a sincere thank you for all community members and business partners who contributed any time or resources for this project. The Independence FFA Chapter is extremely grateful for your endless support.
