Meat Evaluation Team Places 3rd

On August 25th, the Independence FFA Chapter Meat Evaluation team placed 3rd overall and earned a gold rating at the Iowa State FFA Meat Evaluation Career Development Event held at Iowa State University. Team members and their overall individual placings Megan Corkery( 7th ), Avery Hanaway ( 9th ), Keegan Zimmerly( 16th ), Kenzie Fischels ( 29th )  The competition was comprised of 88 individuals representing 28 FFA chapters and the top two teams advanced to the National FFA Meat Evaluation CDE in Indianapolis this October. The competition involved a problem-activity based on calculating a ground beef formulation, yield grading and quality grading of beef carcasses, carcass ranking, and retail identification of 25 different retail cuts from beef, pork, and lamb.

The Buchanan County 4-H Junior Meats Team whose members included Conner Rawlings, Katie Johnson, Annie Johnson, and Collin Wilson placed 4th . The team completed retail. I.D., carcass grading, and yield grading. The team practiced and prepared with the Independence FFA meats team.
