Mary Kozlowski

Mary is a 2012 graduate from Laramie High School in Laramie, Wyoming, where she is originally from. While in high school, she was involved in cross country, track and choir. After graduation she went on to run and sing for the University of Wyoming and continue her education in pursuit of her teaching degree.

Mary completed her BA in Elementary Education with a Minor in Early Childhood Development at the University of Wyoming. Mary was a substitute teacher for a semester in Laramie, Wyoming for the Albany County School District, then went on to student teach at Sheridan County School District 2, in Sheridan, Wyoming. After graduation, she moved to Vinton, IA.

Mary notes, “Every summer since I was a child we visited my Grandma in Vinton, IA. I fell in love with the state because it was so different from what I was used to back in Wyoming. It has always been my dream to teach in Iowa and take care of her farmhouse. Thank you so much for welcoming me into your community.”

Ms. Kozlowski is teaching 3rd grade at West Elementary and is eager to learn from her colleagues and be a part of the Independence community and school district. Her goal is to create a thirst for knowledge in the students and foster an environment where questions are encouraged and students work together every day to discover multiple understandings.

Outside of the classroom, Mary can be found connecting with her parents and siblings back in Wyoming,  hiking, fishing, running, playing sports and being involved in music. Music has always been a large part of her life. She began playing piano at the age of five and the flute at age ten. Mary is currently a member of the church choir at St. Mary’s in Vinton. She is also eager to become involved in the Independence community as the year progresses.

With Kozlowski’s fresh outlook on education, she will be instrumental in helping lead the ICSD into a new era.  Feel free to contact Ms. Kozlowski at or by calling (319) 334-7405.
