Mustangs Welcome New Activities Director

March 16, 2015(Independence, IA) – The Independence Community School District is thrilled to announce that the Activities Director position has been filled by Justin Putz. A former Social Studies teacher for the district, Justin is wearing a few hats in this new role as he also serves as the head football coach and head track coach.

A 2005 graduate of Edgewood-Colesburg, Putz learned the value of hard work and teamwork by being involved in many athletic and extracurricular activities from an early age. He went on to receive a US History and World History Education degree from Wartburg College where he played collegiate baseball for the Knights.

Putz taught 7th and 8th grade social studies at Louisa-Muscatine Community Schools for 5 years. While there, Justin founded his desire for coaching as he served as the varsity offensive football coach for 4 years; the varsity girls’ basketball coach for 3 years; the head baseball coach for 2 years; and the head football coach for one year.

Joining the ICSD team in the summer of 2014, Putz taught 7th grade Social Studies and worked as the Mustangs’ head defensive coordinator before taking over the role of head football coach and Activities Director in the fall of 2014.

Putz stresses the significance of being involved by saying, “I believe strongly in the role that activities play in the educational process. I am excited to help continue to grow our activities department and provide students with opportunities to participate in what interests them.”

With Putz’s varied career in athletics and coaching, he will be instrumental in helping the District further develop the Activities Department.  If you have questions regarding the ICSD Activities Department, please contact Justin Putz at jputz@independence.k12.ia.us or (319) 334-7400.
