Mustangs Welcome New Jr/Sr High School Principal

July 11, 2014 (Independence, IA) – The Independence Community School District (ICSD) is delighted to introduce John Howard as the new Jr./Sr. High School Principal.

Howard is a 1992 high school graduate from Knoxville, Iowa.  After high school he attended the University of Iowa for a year and then finished his B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Spanish from Central College.  He later went on to attain a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Drake University.

Howard has been in the education profession for nearly twenty years. For the first eleven years in education, he taught Spanish and Social Studies courses along with coaching football, boys’ basketball and boys’ and girls’ golf. For the last seven years, Howard has been the principal at two different schools; with the most recent position being the 7-12 principal at Fort Dodge St. Edmond.

Principal Howard and his wife, Duana, have relocated their family to Independence, where their three children will attend the Independence Community Schools.  Kaden, 13, will be entering 8th grade; Kellen, 10, will be entering 5th grade; and Karlyn, 5, will be going into kindergarten.

Howard states, “I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to help lead the Independence Jr./Sr. High School for the 2014-2015 academic year, and I look forward to working with everyone to help achieve our goal – to be the best educational environment in the state of Iowa.”
