New Principal for ICSD’s West Elementary

August 1, 2014 (Independence, IA) – The Independence Community School District (ICSD) is pleased to introduce Dewey Hupke as the new West Elementary Principal.

Originally from Cherokee, IA – a town on the Little Sioux River that also has a Mental Health Institute and a population of around 6,000 – Hupke notices that Independence has many similarities to his hometown, he also notes that, “the community outreach has been so positive that it’s easy to already feel at home here.”

Dewey Hupke is named West Elementary Principal.

Dewey Hupke is named West Elementary Principal.

After graduating high school in 1991, Hupke attended Northwestern College in Orange City, IA where he attained his B.S. in Elementary Education in 1995.  While at Northwestern College, Hupke was co-captain of the football team where he learned the value of leadership and camaraderie under the positive influence of Coach Larry Korver (whom his son is named after, which is suitable as Dewey himself is named after his father’s college football coach).

Hupke has been in the education field for nearly 20 years. He taught 3rd grade in Alta, IA; 6th grade math at MOC Floyd Valley, IA; 6th grade at South Sioux City Community Schools; 4th grade in Pocahontas, IA and 6th grade in Strom Lake, IA.  During his time teaching, he was also active in coaching different school athletics and activities.

Principal Hupke and his wife, Heather, have relocated their family to Independence, where their children will attend the Independence Community Schools.  Mackenzie will be entering 8th grade and Korver will be entering 4th grade.  The Hupke’s also keep their deceased daughter, Bailey, in their hearts.  Both Mackenzie and Korver plan to be very active in the athletics and activities the Independence Community Schools have to offer.

Hupke states, “Hard work is important.  It may not be the easiest thing to do, but working hard is an important life lesson.  I’m excited to work hard for this community, ‘West is Best’ and I’m going to work hard to be sure the whole state of Iowa knows it.”

With Hupke’s enthusiasm and hard work ethic, he will be an effective leader in moving the ICSD into a new era.  Feel free to contact Principal Hupke at dhupke@independence.k12.ia.us  or by calling (319)334-7405.
