Phase One of The Final Push is Underway at ICSD’s Leinbaugh Field
June 9, 2014 (Independence, IA) – At the March 17th school board meeting, the school board approved Phase One of The Final Push. This included hiring HSR Associates to proceed with new turf, tennis courts and one parking lot. The initial steps of Phase One, installing synthetic turf at Leinbaugh Field, are now underway, with an estimated completion date of July 31st.
The new turf on Leinbaugh Field will eliminate the need for a separate soccer field and avoid duplication of bleachers, lights, concessions and restrooms. It will serve as the primary soccer and football field for the Mustangs and will be used by other sport teams, band, and physical education classes. By switching to synthetic turf, the district is set to save an estimated $40,000/year on maintenance of the grass playing fields eliminated by the turf. These savings more than cover the replacement of the top layer of the turf, needed roughly every 12 years. The Mustangs will now be able to host soccer (all ages), football (all ages), band competitions and many more events on the same field. The turf will be able to handle limitless foot traffic and maintain peak surface conditions.
The construction on Leinbaugh Field is just the beginning steps of a greater vision, achieving a single campus. The next part of Phase One is relocating the district’s tennis courts (currently located at the old high school site and in poor shape) and adding an additional parking lot to the ICSD campus. Phase Two of The Final push will consist of a softball and baseball diamond on the ICSD campus, along with another parking lot and access road.
Phase One of The Final Push is funded by a combination of SILO/PPEL Funds and private donations/grants from local businesses, families and individuals. Several in-kind volunteers have helped removed the grass and top soil from the site.
Coach Brandon Krusey states, “Our goal is to balance our top notch indoor facilities with top of the line outdoor facilities. The Final Push will provide our athletes and students with exemplary facilities and better market our district to potential families.”
