Shaw Family Makes Donation to ICSD American Trotter Trail
May 25, 2016 (Independence, IA) – The Independence Community School District (ICSD) would like to extend their thanks to a recent donor of the American Trotter Trail project, the Shaw Family. The Shaw family made a donation of a bench, trash receptacle and light in the memory of their father, Frank Shaw, Jr., honoring him with a plaque on the bench which reads, “In Memory of Frank Shaw Jr. A Kind and Caring Man.”
Frank Shaw, Jr. was a man dedicated to his community; including having an extensive military career and playing an instrumental part in bringing the military tank and Howitzer to Veteran’s Park. He was continually giving back and was active in the Lions Club, VFW and American Legion. Following in his father’s footsteps; Frank was a business owner for over 40 years, running Shaw’s Plumbing and Heating and Shaw’s Skelgas.
Frank especially loved supporting local students and cherished being a greeter at the local elementary schools. He loved the students and felt it was his duty and honor to welcome them each morning; Giving them hugs and praise, he got just as much from them in return. Shaw even recruited his fellow Shyster’s to become greeters. Frank’s love for children is the reason for this bench donation, located in front of the elementary school where he welcomed students every morning.
Mr. Shaw instilled many values in his family; his ideals will live on forever in the sayings he passed on to the future generations: “You have to be smarter than the average bear” and “work smarter, not harder.” The Shaw family honors their father with this donation and hope others will leave a legacy for their family to cherish in Independence, because “America’s Fame is in Our Name”.
The funds donated to the American Trotter Trail Project are used to pay for the benches, lighting and litter receptacles along the trail. The District recently installed additional lights along the American Trotter Trail using donated proceeds.
Making a donation to the American Trotter Trail is a distinct way to honor a loved one, recognize a graduating class (Class of XXXX), remember an achievement (XXXX State Champs), or publicize your business name to all who frequent the trail.
Community members have access to this paved trail on part of the Independence Community School District’s 92 acres. The American Trotter Trail name is in honor of the late C.W. Williams who owned a horse racing publication in the 1890’s called, The American Trotter, and also had a nationally recognized kite-shaped horse racing track, located primarily on the school’s 92 acres. The American Trotter Trail connects all three school buildings, creating a unified campus.
