Teri Schloss Named 2016 Iowa School Nurse of the Year
February 26, 2016 – Congratulations to Teri Schloss the 2016 Iowa School Nurse Organization School Nurse of the Year.
Teri has been a school nurse in the Independence Community School District for ten years. A fellow school nurse, Rhonda Jasper nominated Teri for this honor, stating in her nomination letter “Teri’s first priority is the child’s welfare and health”. Teri is currently the school nurse in a preschool thru 2nd grade school in Independence where she is described by a teacher as being “knowledgeable, organized, available and caring”.
Teri began her nursing career at Des Moines Area Community College Ankeny earning her ADN. After practicing in a variety of clinical settings in the hospital, family practice and home health care she began her career in school nursing. Furthering her education, she obtained her BSN from the University of Iowa and an MSN from Mount Mercy University. In the summer of 2015 she became a Nationally Certified School Nurse.
Teri serves on the Iowa School Nurse Organization board as Legislative Chair and on the Iowa Nurses Association Public Policy Committee. She has served on the board and worked as a camp nurse for Camp Fire’s Camp Hitaga. Teri is a member of Iowa Public Health Association and Sigma Theta Tau.
Teri serves on her district’s wellness committee, has updated many school nursing policies, and advocated for district nurses to be included as a professional member of the school staff. She has been a preceptor to BSN students from Allen College and coordinated with Buchanan County Public Health to provide required vaccines to students. She has a great sense of humor, evident by the humor she brings to staff presentations and in her school clinic! Teri is proud to say that as of this year, her district has a school nurse in every building, all day, every day!
Being a nurse in an educational setting, Teri rarely passes up the opportunity to make each moment a teachable moment with students, parents, and staff! She is an exemplary school nurse and we are proud to have her represent Iowa as our School Nurse of the Year. Teri will be recognized at the ISNO School Nurse Conference in Ames, Iowa on April 8th, 2016.
Congratulations Teri!
