January 13, 2014 (Independence, IA) – Virginia Lake is glad to be back in the position of K-12 Teacher Librarian at the Independence Community School District (ICSD).
It’s appropriate to say that Lake has extensive knowledge as a teacher, librarian, and with media as she has been in the education field for nearly 27 years. Prior to h
er current position at ICSD, Lake was a 5th grade teacher for 11 years (Maquoketa, West Des Moines, and Independence), an English as a Second Language teacher for 6 months in Taiwan, a Teacher Librarian for 7 years (Manchester and Independence), taught 2nd grade for 4 years (Independence), and also has experience substitute teaching.
Virginia has an Elementary Education degree from Old Dominion University, a Masters in Library Media Studies from the University of Northern Iowa, and a Reading Endorsement from Iowa State University.
Lake’s job title refers to two roles she is very passionate about, being a teacher and being a librarian. She manages the media centers in each building and is committed to developing a collection of materials that support curriculum and student interest in each library. She aids students and staff in the library, media center, and classrooms as they acquire new technologies and applications.
Outside of school, Virginia enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her family. Her husband, George, is the President of the Marion Economic Development Company. Her son, Tony, is a junior at UNI. Her daughter, Sarah, is a senior at IHS and her youngest, Katherine, is in 8th grade.
As the Teacher Librarian, Lake’s mission is to, “Help students and staff to be more efficient and effective users of the information available to them.” She also recognized the need to adapt to the ever changing technology found in schools, such as offering e-books as a reading material option to students. “Every child can love reading; we just need to find the book that fits them and their world.”
